What is the difference between minimum wage and the living wage? 

The National Minimum Wage was introduced in the UK in 1999 and established an absolute minimum that workers could be payed for their work, dependant on their age. Initially, the wage was £3.60 per hour for workers over 21 and £3.00 hour for workers between 18 and 21. This is a long way from where we are now, however, because, as of April 2018, the National Minimum Wage is now £7.38 for those over 21, £5.90 for 18 to 21 year olds and £4.20 for under 18s. 

The National Living Wage differs slightly to the National Minimum Wage and has been around for a significantly smaller amount of time, only being introduced in April of 2016. Only workers aged 25 and over are entitled to the National Living Wage, which aims to provide workers with a means to provide for a basic but decent life for themselves. The National Living Wage is currently £7.83 per hour as of April 2018.
