What is acceptable practice to monitor staff in the workplace?

 

The national survey of more than 1,200 UK workers, conducted by the TUC in May this year, found 56 per cent of people felt monitoring was going on in the workplace, through methods including CCTV, vehicle trackers, browsing history and phone logs.

There are may legitimate reasons that you may monitor your employees in the workplace but it is essential that they are fully aware of these measures and how any information resulting from monitoring may be used.

As an employer, you should therefore ensure that your Privacy Policies and Company Handbooks reflect any monitoring practices and that these are of course compliant with GDPR. It may be appropriate to have suitable signage within the business, for example if CCTV is in operation.

Having monitoring in place within your business should not be a substitute for effective performance management strategies but make such strategies more effective by providing useful data to help improve the performance of your employees.
