I Only Have Part Time Staff, Do I Still Have to Comply With H&S Law?

 

Any number of people performing the same role are exposed to exactly the same risks, regardless of how many hours a week they perform that role for. But do you as an employer still have to comply with H&S law if you only have part time staff?

The short answer is yes. Risk is risk regardless of how long someone is exposed to it for, therefore part time employees should be afforded the same level of risk management as their full time counterparts. Any duties performed by part time workers that present a hazard or danger should be properly risk assessed as usual and the appropriate measures taken to avoid or minimise these hazards. Part timers should also be provided with proper PPE in order to perform their roles.

Legally, companies are required to meet a basic standard of Health & Safety for all employees, regardless of their hours of work.
