How Do I Tackle an Employee That Has a Poor Standard of Dress and Personal Hygiene? 

As an employer or manager, you will have to tackle things such as poor performance at work, frequent absences, staff disagreements and breaches of contract. However, one thing that doesn’t immediately spring to mind but you may have to manage is the hygiene and dress standards of your employees. Although not immediately as obvious as a feud between staff members, an employee with poor personal hygiene can be just as disruptive. But how do you manage this? Let us help you out. 

The first step is to consider whether the employee was always poorly groomed, or if it is a new development. If so, it could be a sign of an underlying problem and helps you prepare for your discussions. 

In the meeting, set out your observations and concerns. Make it clear that you appreciate this is a difficult conversation to have, but your purpose here is to provide help and support. If the employee opens up and makes you aware of issues that are impacting them, see how you can work with them to provide support. If the employee offers no valid reason, make clear the acceptable standards of dress/hygiene and monitor this.
